Acceptable minimum tests scores: 92 overall for TOEFL with no individual score coming under 20; or 6.0 overall on the IELTS with each single score not falling under 6.0. Scores that do not meet the minimum requirements will be declined as ineligible.
• Please provide contact details for 3 referees who will be asked to complete confidential letters of reference online. Your application will not be evaluated until the three recommendation letters have been completed. Two of your referees must be academic; the third referee could be an academic or professional. If applicants are using a professional reference, they should be from a prior position related to the earth sciences.
• You are required to provide evidence of your research potential by developing a Statement of Intent. Note the following for the Statement of Intent:

• State your reasons for applying to University of Western specifically
• The statement should be in the format of a research proposal
• Provide background information to position your proposed research within the context of the current knowledge in the field.
• Outline your objectives, hypotheses, approach, and methods
• Indicate the significance of the research you are proposing.
• If no communication with a potential thesis supervisor, you must give a detailed description of your research interests. You will not be required to produce a research statement, it just allows the admissions committee to evaluate your research objectives, your background for graduate school, and your writing and communication skills in English.
• The statement should include the names of potential supervisors that you have had contact with.
• It should be no more than one single-spaced page. If you are including references, they may spill over to a second page.
• Upon submission of your application, including reference letters, it would be reviewed by potential faculty supervisors. If a suitable supervisor is found, a final decision can be reached in two weeks. If a suitable supervisor cannot be found, the application remains open until the deadline elapses and the application is deemed unsuccessful.
